A Historical Perspective
Most of my clients are surprised to learn that dance/movement is actually the oldest form of therapeutic intervention. Medicine men and women from many ancient cultures used-and still use- movement to bring about healing. These cultures existed before the European thinkers of the 18th century declared a strict separation between the mind and body.
These days, given the stress of modern life, people are looking for new ways to feel better. Those who formerly wouldn’t have considered doing something like yoga, tai chi or meditation, are discovering that these ancient therapeutic movement techniques have a lot to offer. It is extremely interesting that we in the 21st century are returning to our ancient roots by exploring the sorts of healing activities that bring the mind and body back to parity. Working in this reintegrated manner, we can rediscover a sense of control, strength and well-being. Rather than becoming increasingly dependent on pills, surgery and endless visits to the doctor, we can activate our own, innate powers of healing.
