Some goals that can be accomplished through exercise/movement therapy
- Achieve better postural alignment: learn how to stand straight and tall.
- Lessen back pain and stiffness.
- Increase your energy level: lose that sluggish feeling.
- Get in condition before taking on a new sport or activity.
- Learn to move in a way that will prevent injury, both while exercising as well as while performing daily activities.
- Reduce tension, both physical and emotional, through flexibility (stretching) exercises.
- Build self-esteem by strengthening and re-shaping your body. (Feeling comfortable with the way you look and move is important whether you are 17 or 75.)
- Move with more grace, co-ordination and ease.
- Improve your balance: even if it has been severely diminished, balance is a skill that can be strengthened with appropriate training and practice.
- Stand up from a chair and climb stairs with ease instead of groans.
- Support and enhance your efforts to deal with alcohol, drug, or food addiction. (This was the focus of my work as a dance/movement therapist in rehabilitation hospitals and clinics)
- Reduce depression and anxiety.
Important note: Be sure to get a thorough physical check up before doing this, or any other exercise/movement program. It is important to have your doctor’s OK before we begin. I will accommodate your medical condition and conscientiously follow your doctor’s advice, but am not myself a medical authority or physical therapist.
